Notes

  • As always in northern Vietnam, we should avoid early November to late February for photographers; the weather is really grey, and there is no light and no rice in the fields.
  • Photography tour says that the guests will be outside during the “golden hours” (sunrise – 2 hours after sunrise / 2 hours before sunset – sunset); please make sure that the car will be available at this time of the day.
  • Please double check the rice harvest in northern Vietnam; there is a slight difference between Mai Chau and Pu Luong, due to the higher altitude of Pu Luong. For example, on June 20th 2018, about 20% of the harvest was done in Pu Luong, whereas in the valley before Pu Luong, they were about to start planting the next harvest.
  • For photography tours, we need to make it crystal clear about the rice situation in the area: no rice is not a problem if you inform the guests that the local people will be planting the rice, and that the tour will focus on different subjects. For example, there are lots of opportunities to see people, to take pictures with reflections, etc.
  • Guests need to bring their own gear for the tour.

Important notes

  • Photographers need to shoot during the golden hours, which are the first 2 hours after sunrise and the last 2 hours before sunset; it is really important to understand that.
  • Photographers may request to stop along the way if they see a good opportunity for pictures (for example, a farmer seated on a buffalo); we need a good and flexible driver.
  • Photographers tend to carry a lot of valuable equipment, so we need to inform the driver to be careful when he is moving the bags and be especially careful not to use liquid near the bags (such as an open bottle of water). Water is the photographers’ worst nightmare.

In the afternoon, you will have the chance to experience the life of an Hanoian in the 1950’s and travel through the Old Quarter on a cycle rickshaw for 45 minutes. Discover the bustling streets of the “Quarter of the 36 guilds’’ – a place of unique charm and endless activity. You’ll see all sorts of artisans and crafts, like tinsmiths, jewelers, calligraphers, carpenters, mobile stalls, leather or rattan goods, people selling fans, votive objects, lacquer ware, silk, mats, paper, pipes, and so much more. Then, take a leisurely stroll around the Sword Lake and stop to visit the beautiful Ngoc Son Temple on an island in the middle of the lake, accessible via a red, wooden bridge.

Meals included: Dinner
Accommodation:

Notes: Rooms will be at guests’ disposal from 14:00

Day 2: Hanoi – Mai Chau

In the morning, you’ll travel to the Long Bien area for the golden hours of sunrise. The area is great for photographers, with the sun rising over the famous Long Bien Bridge. After crossing the streets, it will be time for street photography in the famous Long Bien Market, one of the biggest markets in Hanoi, which gets very busy early in the morning and where you will have plenty of opportunities for portraits.

After the breakfast, head out of Hanoi to Mai Chau, passing along charming little roads. En route, the road ascends gradually until you find yourself in the middle of a landscape of mountains set at a medium altitude. Upon arriving in Mai Chau, you will be served a welcome lunch prepared by a local family in a traditional Thai stilt house. This will be a privileged moment to exchange ideas with them and learn more about their daily life.
In the afternoon, pay a visit to a neighboring village inhabited by one of the ethnic Thai minorities of norhern Vietnam, the white Thai. In these mountainous regions, you will discover more about the local crafts and the customs of the inhabitants. The rest of the day is your’s to walk around the village and rest at the home-stay. At the end of the afternoon, you’ll set off for a walk in the countryside. As the sun sets, you’ll see many inhabitants moving through the rice fields to take care of the small paths or to collect whelks, which makes a perfect scene for photographers. In the evening, you will return to your host family for dinner, before enjoying a very welcoming Thai folk dance performed by the locals.

At night, everyone will sleep in the large main room of a local’s house. To ensure your maximum comfort, the house is furnished with beds (mattresses, sheets, pillows, mosquito nets, fans).

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation: Home-stay
Distance: 150 kilometers – 4 hours
Notes: Long Bien market is really busy in the morning and it can be slippery near the fish sellers, we recommend wearing good shoes.

Day 3: Mai Chau – Pu Luong

Before breakfast, seize the golden hours and take a walk around the countryside near the home-stay, when farmers will already be working in the fields. After breakfast, depart from Mai Chau for the Pu Luong Nature Reserve, which is populated by the white Thai and Muong peoples. On a walk through the park, you can see plenty of incredible flora and fauna, with more than 1000 listed plant species and many species of birds. After checking-in at the lodge, enjoy lunch with a beautiful view over the rice terraces. In the afternoon, drive to Chien Lau Bridge, where you will start a 7-kilometer walk to discover the water mills along the Cham River, and learn how to handle and steer a bamboo raft on the river. Then, you will continue your walk to the Tan Lap Bridge, where you will find your vehicle and return to the lodge.

From the lodge, there are a few great spots to view and photograph the sunset: from the bungalow, directly above the rice terraces, and with the reflections on the swimming pool.

Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation: Overnight at the Pu Luong Retreat
Distance and duration of the walk: 7 kilometers – 3 hours
Distance: Mai Chau -Pu Luong – 55 kilometers – 1 hr 30 min

Notes:
Bamboo rafts are really stable for photographers, and there is almost no risk of falling into the river. However, we recommend only bringing 1 body with 1 lens and avoid bringing unnecessary equipment such as extra lenses or a tripod, which would be in a backpack closer to the water level.

Day 4: Pu Luong

In the morning, wake up early to enjoy the sunrise. At only a few minutes’ walk to the rice terraces, you can often find locals already working in the fields, which will provide you with some excellent photos. You will then return to the hotel for breakfast.

After some breakfast and rest, start a descent into a valley facing the lodge, walking along the paths, surrounded by rice terraces, near the village of Kho Muong. Then, you will continue treading along paths through fields of corn, other terraced fields, and small villages. After a picnic meal, rest for a moment and take in the freshness of the river before heading back to the lodge. The end of the afternoon will be free. A workshop on editing pictures will be conducted by your tour-leader at the end of the afternoon in order to give you some tips on using a lightroom.

Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation: Overnight at the Pu Luong Retreat
Distance and walking time: 13 kilometers – 4 hr 30 min
Terrain – ascent and descent which could be slippery in case of rain.

At the beginning of the afternoon, you will start to explore the Van Long Nature Reserve and take a pleasant bike ride on the dam levee. After cycling through the countryside, step aboard a small rowboat for a peaceful journey through the flooded rice fields and the spectacular landscape of rocky peaks, canals, and vegetation. You will then make your way to the hotel.

In the morning, you will head towards the famous Halong Bay. On the way, you will pass through the Thai Binh province and the large port city of Haiphong before arriving in Halong around noon. There, embark on a cruise through the must-see Halong Bay. This world-famous bay is one of the most beautiful landscapes in Vietnam, with its giant rock islets covered in luxuriant vegetation overlooking the waters. Halong Bay includes some 1,900 islands and islets of rocky peaks, often uninhabited and untouched by human hands. These scenes create a spectacular marine landscape, which earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 1994. You will be served lunch and dinner aboard the cruise, which consists of excellent, freshly caught seafood from the bay. Be sure not to miss the sunset on the top deck for beautiful pictures. At the end of the day, you will even have the chance to enjoy a night fishing session on the boat.

Comidas incluidas: desayuno, almuerzo, cena.

Distancia: Mai Chau -Pu Luong – 55 kilómetros – 1 hora y 30 minutos.

Notas:

Comidas incluidas: desayuno, almuerzo, cena.

Alojamiento:
Distancia: Pu Luong – Ninh Binh: 180 kilómetros – 4 horas y 30 minutos – 5 horas.

Tag 2: Hanoi – Mai Chau

Tag 3: Mai Chau – Pu Luong
