During colonial British rule, Yangon was a major financial, political, and administrative hub and Burma itself a large exporter of oil, cotton, rice, and timber. The prestigious new Yangon Excelsior, a luxurious hotel opened in downtown Yangon in July 2018, has been painstakingly refurbished from the Heritage Building of the Headquarters of Steel Brothers Limited Company, a major British exporter in the early 19th century. Dating back to the 1870s, this iconic piece of architecture, refurbished to its original splendor, evokes a nostalgic tone as it draws on the Rangoon’s golden age.
