MYANMAR – Shwedagon Pagoda’s golden spire under renovation

It’s that time of the decade again. As is the case with all ancient and historic monuments, sometimes these noteworthy landmarks need to undergo necessary maintenance. This year marks the start of when a certain important pagoda in Myanmar has to undergo important repairs and restoration procedures—the amazing, gilded Shwedagon Pagoda itself.

Despite the annual 3.5 million tourists that come to Myanmar every year, this renovation could not be put off any longer; so, please keep in mind that from October 2018 to March 2019, the Shwedagon Pagoda’s famous 99-meter-high stupa will be entirely covered by scaffolding and obstructed from view. However, don’t worry about paying the pagoda a visit; it will remain open to the public during the renovation, but, the famously gilded stupa will not be ready for pictures. While this may pose a minor inconvenience to your set itineraries, please keep in mind that Myanmar has so much more to offer its guests.
