Land of A Million Elephants”, Laos is one of the countries the least touched by modern civilization in South East Easia. With few transport infrastructures, the country's main communications artery is the Mekong River. Also, more than half of the inhabitants from the different ethnic groups (Lao, Thai, Meo/Hmong, Mien/Yao, etc) live along the Mekong and its tributaries and most are subsistence farmers. Among the major sites, there are Luang Prabang, the Nam Ou riverside, Vientiane, the Plain of Jars, the Bolaven Plateau and Champassak.
