Day 2: Luang Prabang
In the morning, you will start a bike tour to discover Luang Prabang, its surroundings and the daily life of local people. Luang Prabang is a provincial city where time seems to stand still. As the city never experiences heavy traffic, it is easy to bicycle around. As part of the UNESCO reconstruction plan, new buildings have been limited and old houses and streets are reconstructed to keep Luang Prabang as magical as it has always been. The center of the town is located on a peninsula, 300 meters above sea level. There you will see ancient buildings, the Royal Palace, monasteries and temples. You will make a break to visit Vat Mai temple built at the end of the 18th century, a capped sanctuary featuring a five-sided roof topped by three parasols. Continue on to visit the Vat Xieng Thong, a vast collection of sacred buildings, one of the jewels of Laotian art and the most beautiful temple of the city. Visit the Vat Visoun temple, the oldest temple of the city, with its wooden windows inspired by the Khmer temple of Vat Phou. To continue the visit outside the city, you will cross the Nam Khan river and ride along the Mekong river at your own pace to reach Ban Xieng Lek and Ban Xang Khong where you will discover traditional weaving and the procedure to make the Sa paper. After the visit you will return to Luang Prabang center.

Suggestion of restaurant for your dinner: Manda de Laos
While daily life has changed in Laos and around the world, at “Manda de Laos” they carry on the traditions and spirit of “Mama Phiew” (Manda meaning “Mother” in Laotian), dedicated to sharing how the people of Laos cooked and ate in the past.

Meals included: Breakfast
Accommodation: Overnight at the hotel

Day 3: Luang Prabang
In the early morning, you will be taken by your guide to Vat Nong temple to attend the Tak Bath ceremony (procession of monks). During the ceremony, devoted residents of Luang Prabang kneel on the sidewalk, bearing food in their hands, which they offer to the monks as they walk by. After this humbling experience, your guide will take you to an animated local market. Each stall offers different kinds of food ranging from fruits and vegetables to meats and fishes, herbs, and fragrant spices. The sights, sounds and smells will surely awaken all your senses. While walking through, you will have a chance to taste and savor some local snacks. Don’t be afraid to try, if it looks good, it’s sure to taste good. But don’t fill up too much! After your market tour you will be taken to a welcoming local restaurant at the Mekong river bank for a soup designed to fill your stomach to start your day. If you are not up to soup in the morning, you can also just enjoy a coffee while watching the daily routine of the residents. You will then have the end of the morning at leisure to discover the city or to have a rest.
In the afternoon, you will meet Marie-Pierre, a Belgian researcher focused on the cultural diversity of Laos. You will spend your afternoon with her for a visit of Luang Prabang focusing on local handicraft, from Lao and minority groups. The visit will start with the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre where you will learn about the traditions and handicraft of several ethnic groups of Laos. It will then continue with a meeting with Pralak Pralam (Luang Prabang royal ballet) masks makers. The day will end with the visit of Ock Pop Tok Centre where you will observe local weavers, the making of Hmong batik, and learn more about the making of silk and natural coloration, while continuing the discussion on one of the nicest terrace in the city.

Day 4: Luang Prabang – Pak Ou – Luang Prabang
You will board a local motorboat to travel the 35 kilometers to the Pak Ou caves, the most famous Buddhist site around Luang Prabang. After the 1.5 to 2-hour boat ride, you will reach the Pak Ou site and climb up the stairs to the entrance, to find thousands of Buddha statues inside. Avoid the touristic restaurants at Pak Ou and enjoy a delicious local lunch cooked on the boat, at your own pace and in privacy. The local family will provide you a great insight into local cuisine and adapt the dishes to your dietary.
After the return to Luang Prabang, enjoy time at leisure before meeting with your guide in late afternoon to experience a baci ceremony. This traditional ritual is deeply revered by every Lao person and is performed for many kinds of circumstances (birth, death, wedding, illness…).
