Description
The mountains around the Phrao district in northern Thailand are home to various hill tribe minorities, one of them being the Akha. This ethnic minority has a very distinct culture, history, and way of living, which is under pressure and danger by modernization and social influence. A trip to this area gives guests the opportunity to experience the culture and hospitality of the Akha first-hand while contributing to the preservation of their ethnic heritage in a sustainable way. Life in the villages is simple, and revolves primarily around agriculture. Depending on the season, it may even be possible to participate in some activities in and around the villages to get a truly hands-on experience of northern Thai life!

Competitor comparison
None of our competitors organize this excursion. The only one with a similar concept in the area is the 2D1N Akha Outpost Trekking, offered by Khum Lanna.
Pros
- It is organized directly with the community and no supplier is involved, so the community benefits directly
- Can be customized based on travelers’ needs; plenty of flexibility
Cons
- Too far as a day trip from Chiang Mai; at least 1 overnight stay in Phrao is always needed (day before or after)
- Locals don’t have experience with tourism, and service level may not be consistent in the beginning
- Although accessible all year, the accessibility is reduced a bit in the rainy season (June – October)
- Visibility can be a problem during the hot season (March – May) due to smoke
Information
- An vernighto stay in Phrao at Khum Lanna is recommended (overnight only, or can be combined with their packages)
- Since we pay for all services provided by local people (local guide, food, activities, accommodation, etc.), we directly support members of the local community. In addition, there is a contribution per person to a fund, which is managed by a committee representing the different villages.
Alerts
- Only possible with English-speaking guide! In case of other language needs, always check with Operations first!
- During the rainy season (June – October), the program may need to be adjusted or changed to guarantee guests’ safety. Due to the rain, trails may become dangerous and roads may be damaged. Normally this program is not affected and accessible year-round, but guests need to be aware of this.
- The activity is in a more rural, off-the-beaten path area, and unforeseen circumstances can always happen; guests need to have an open mind.
Important information
- We do have a fixed itinerary, but with the concept of the excursion being local immersion. It is possible that we propose alternative activities on spot during the day (for example during harvesting times, local festivals, etc.).
- Guests should take a raincoat, sunscreen, mosquito spray, and comfortable clothes for walking.
- The local people guests will meet during the excursion do not speak English at all.
- Adding a guide for translation purposes is always necessary.
