The Tamarind Village is simultaneously elegant, peaceful, and laid-back. Designed by renowned national Thai architect Ong-Ard Satrabhandhu, this was Chiang Mai’s first Lanna-styled hotel, using traditional techniques and materials of the Lanna period. With the hotel’s old-style feel and serene gardens set in courtyards, romantics will feel very much at home here, and indeed, the small resort is filled with boutique-loving, culture-appreciating young couples. Those who want a more party atmosphere with the accouterments of a big hotel probably will want to go elsewhere, as this spot is meant for those seeking greenery, quiet, and cozy spots under the trees to admire the surroundings.

Tamarind Village’s 41 guest rooms and 5 suites are situated around a series of flower-filled courtyards, giving each room a sense of relaxed space. Although on the small side (the resort describes them as “cozy”), the rooms at the Tamarind Village are comfortable, with large beds and plenty of unique decors, such as homemade crafts and clothing made by northern ethnic Thai hill tribe groups. The bathrooms are nicely designed, with artsy brass sinks, outdoor showers, and other boutique touches. The balconies make up for the lack of space; they are charming spots to sit and admire the gardens and ancient tamarind trees.

The pampering Village Spa does herbal facials, body scrubs, and wraps and uses luk pra kob, steamed compresses filled with tamarind, kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, and other local herbs in signature treatments; it’s set in a teak-filled house. This relaxing retreat makes up for the lack of a fitness center and the fact that the swimming pool is rather small and not very private. It is next to the hotel’s lone restaurant/bar, which serves inclusive buffet breakfasts and northern Thai specialties for lunch and dinner. For breakfast, an abundant buffet of Thai staples and international dishes, including an omelet station, are enjoyed in the dining room or pool-lined terrace. High tea service is also available.
