People seem to forget that every great trip to an exotic destination, as well as showing off all that the place has to offer, should also have an element of rest and relaxation. For this reason, the first part of this itinerary has been designed to emphasize two of the things that make Laos such a special place – peace and tranquility – exactly what weary travelers need at the start of a long journey! Unlike the usual trips to Laos, this itinerary starts in the south and allows for some well-deserved R&R time to charge up the batteries before heading deeper into a country of ancient ruin temples frozen in time, picturesque riverine archipelagos with laid-back sun-tanned locals, and high tropical plateaus covered with aromatic coffee plantations and hidden jungle waterfalls. And this is just the south! Up in the north the immersion into the history, the culture, and the local way of life continues in the magical UNESCO World Heritage City of Luang Prabang, with age-old ceremonies to support the local monks and novices, traditional rituals to ward off evil spirits, and spending time with the locals and participating in their daily activities in the rice fields and along the banks of the Nam Ou, one of northern Laos’ most scenic rivers. The climax of this adventure will be a visit to the magical tiered waterfalls and turquoise pools of Kuang Sy – the perfect way to end an unforgettable experience!

Day 1: Arrival in the South of Laos

Upon arrival at the airport, you’ll be warmly welcomed and travel to the sleepy town of Champasak. From the Champasak post office head down to the Mekong riverbank where a motorized local boat will take you on the 15-minute trip to reach the sandy shore of the little island of Don Daeng. Check in to your bungalow and settle in to your accommodation for the next couple of nights.

In the late afternoon, walk down to the shore and climb aboard the sunset cruise boat! Set sail and float peacefully along the Mekong River while enjoying a magical sunset over the sacred mountains of Champasak. Unwind on board and enjoy the delicious canapes and drinks provided. After the sun has shed its final rays, make your way back to Don Daeng Island.

Day 2: Don Daeng Island

Every great trip includes some time to unwind and relax and this one is no different. Spend the morning relaxing at the resort and absorbing the peace and tranquility which makes Laos such a special place. On Don Daeng Island time really does feel as if it is standing still.

In the afternoon you’ll have the chance to explore the island and its small villages. Grab a bicycle and ride leisurely along the small paths which wind around the island through a mix of scenic landscapes – you’ll see tropical jungle, towering palm trees, charming countryside farming scenes and most likely quite a few fishermen out on the river. Enjoy the beautiful river views along the beach, the colorful local temples and the lively villages dotted around the island.

Day 3: Champasak – Vat Phou – Don Khong

Leave behind the peacefulness of Don Daeng Island and cross the Mekong River to reach the local boat pier of Champasak town, where your vehicle awaits to take you to Vat Phou.

Vat Phou is a pre-Angkorian temple complex listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Upon arrival, you’ll travel by electric car to the base of the sacred mountain of Phou Kao, passing two artificial lakes. From there, you’ll walk along the ancient axis which is demarcated by stone pillars and which leads to the first terrace where the ruined Khmer Hindu palaces adorned with fine sculptures silently stand. Ancient stairs bordered by frangipani trees climb up to a third temple with a unique structure dedicated to the Lord Shiva. Your exploration will continue behind the temple where you can see a natural spring and stone animal carvings before making your way back down to the entrance.

After visiting Vat Phou, you’ll continue your journey by road to the island of Don Khong, the gateway to the archipelago of the 4000 islands, stopping along the way at the rustic village of Ban Ponsaad where you’ll see traditional wooden and bamboo houses on stilts. Most of the houses have thatched roofs and walls made of teak leaves. You’ll also stop at Vat Hatxaikhun, a colorful temple located on the top of a hill just before the bridge to Don Khong Island.

Day 4: Siphandon

After travelling by car to the south of Don Khong Island you’ll visit a local family in a lowland Lao village to learn about the production of traditional homemade rice paper and rice noodles. Then, your journey will continue by boat to Don Som island where you’ll stop at Ban Thapho where the locals will teach you how to make farmers’ hats with palm leaves which can then be taken home as a handmade souvenir. After another short boat trip you’ll have the opportunity to stop and discover the old Keng Koum temple, which mixes Buddhist and Hindu influences, before continuing further down the Mekong River to Don Thorlathee Island, where local villagers make their livings by selling bamboo handicrafts. After another short cruise to reach Don Xang Island, you’ll be able to enjoy a stroll in a natural environment before continuing on to Don Khone.

On Done Khone Island you’ll begin with a visit to the famous Liphi waterfalls and the old locomotive from the French colonial era before continuing to the southern small village of Ban Hang Khone where you’ll navigate on a boat among the islands near the Cambodian border and may have the chance to observe the Irrawaddy dolphins. All along the way, absorb the scenes of local life and enjoy incredible views of the Mekong River. Finally, head across the river and visit the mighty Khonephapheng Waterfalls, the largest in Southeast Asia in terms of volume of water, before driving back to your hotel on Don Khong Island.

Day 5: Siphandon – Bolaven Plateau

This morning you’ll head north to the higher altitude volcanic plateau of the Bolaven. This area is renowned for its altitude and subsequent cool weather. Offering a nice break from the heat of the lowlands during the dry season it is also famed for its coffee plantations and its myriad of waterfalls, each more stunning than the last. Located east of Pakse, you’ll have the opportunity to discover two of the most impressive falls of the Plateau. Emerging from the jungle, the twin 120-meter Tad Fane waterfalls are believed to be amongst the highest in the country. After Tad Fane, continue to Tad Yuang waterfall, which cascades into a 60-meter-deep gorge which stretches through the surrounding National Biodiversity Conservation Area. After making your way down the stairs to the bottom, you’ll have the chance to admire the scenery offered by the natural environment from the viewing point, or relax at the panoramic restaurant, tasting the famous coffee.

Day 6: Mystic Mountain Coffee

Today, you’ll start in Paksong, the Laotian capital of coffee production and the main gateway to the Bolaven plateau, located at an altitude of 1,300 meters. This region, as authentic as it is beautiful, is now inhabited by different Mon-Khmer ethnic groups but originally the French colonists planted coffee, banana and rubber trees there. Nowadays, the coffee produced on this land is globally recognized. The Bolaven area is rich in hidden treasures that are to be found off the beaten track, and you have to travel by Jeep to discover the best of them. You’ll be welcomed by a passionate coffee farmer who will lead you to discover a magnificent and impressive waterfall where you can bathe and relax before continuing to see his land. You’ll stride across his plantations and watch a traditional coffee roasting. Then, you’ll head off for a short walk to explore the small paths surrounded by plantations, fields and forest and which eventually lead to your lunch site, set amidst stunning natural scenery. Once you’ve had your fill of delicious local dishes, your guide will take you to explore the Phu Sanark volcano where you’ll have the ideal position to enjoy the sunset over the plateau. Your day will finish at a local house, isolated at the top of the plateau and surrounded by coffee plantations. The family will show you the best of Laos’ hospitality and invite you to cook some local dishes with them.

Day 7: Mystic Mountain Coffee

Today, you’ll wake up with a delicious cup of coffee before going to see the incredible views of the highlands offered by the Phu Khatok and Phu Khate volcanoes. After lunch, you’ll jump back in your Jeep for a sensational excursion to the far reaches of the Bolaven plateau to visit remote bamboo villages of the Laven and Souay ethnic minorities where you’ll feel like you have stepped back in the time. From here you’ll finish your exploration of the Bolaven and head to your hotel.

Day 8: Pakse – Luang Prabang

Who said Pakse was just a stopover destination in the South of Laos? There are a lot of beautiful and interesting things to discover in the city and its surroundings for those, like you, who take the time to stop and look around! You’ll travel to Vat Luang, the main temple of the district, before continuing to Ban Don Khor, a village reputed for its sand stone carvings created using traditional methods for several decades. Walk through the village, greet the many families who are hard at work, and discover a giant Buddha statue located in Vat Chompet and which is worshipped by the local people. Later, after driving through the large avenues of Pakse surrounded by the mountains, you’ll reach the top of Phou Salao hill where you can enjoy the most impressive viewpoint of the city and the Mekong River.

Finally, you’ll travel to Pakse Airport for your flight to the magical UNESCO World Heritage town of Luang Prabang in the mountainous north of the country.

Day 9: Luang Prabang

In the early morning, you’ll travel with your guide to the temple to see the Tak Bath ceremony. During the ceremony, devoted residents of Luang Prabang kneel on the sidewalk, bearing food in their hands, which they offer to the monks as they walk by clad in their saffron-orange robes. Be drawn into this culturally significant moment, as it takes place in a peaceful and respectful manner, with no words exchanged between the monks and the inhabitants making the offerings. After this humbling experience, your guide will take you to a local market, a very animated place to be in the morning, to say the least.

After the market tour, you’ll be taken to a welcoming local restaurant beside the Mekong River to try a soup designed to quell your hunger and give you energy for the day. If you’re not up to soup in the morning, you can also just enjoy a coffee while watching the daily routine of the residents. After this, you can return to your hotel for your full breakfast.

After breakfast, head out for a tour of the city by tuk-tuk. The city of Luang Prabang is one of the most beautiful cities in Southeast Asia, with its perfect location at the meeting point of the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers and at the foot of an age-old mountain range. Your discovery of Luang Prabang will take you into its most emblematic and culturally-rich sites. In order to fully appreciate your visit of this picturesque city, a guide will share all his knowledge of the city’s history, architecture, and culture with you. On your tour you’ll visit Vat Visoun, the oldest temple in the city, and which stands apart from the others thanks to That Makmo, a stone stupa representing a lotus flower. Afterwards, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view over the city of Luang Prabang and its surroundings, after climbing the 328 steps leading to the top of the Mount Phousi. Then, visit Vat Mai, a respected shrine topped with an amazing roof and which was built at the end of the XVIII century. Later, stop at The Royal Palace, which nowadays houses the National Museum, and has a huge collection of precious items which formerly belonged to the royal family, as well as a large array of statuettes discovered in the temples of the region. Here, you can lay eyes on the Prabang Buddha, considered the most sacred artefact of Laos, and which has given its name to the city. Finally, continue on to Vat Xieng Thong, the temple of the Royal City, a complex of sacred shrines and temples, displaying some of the finest Lao traditional art, and without any doubt, the most beautiful site of Luang Prabang.

In the evening, you’ll be invited to attend a Baci (Sou Khouan) ceremony, one of the most popular traditions in Laos and which accompanies any important life event: weddings, funerals, births, illnesses, trips, etc. The ceremony usually takes place amongst a handful of people, with one or two ‘recipients’, the ‘officiate’ and a few ‘assistants. But for larger occasions, such as weddings, they can gather dozens of people. During the ceremony you attend, the officiating person will recall your souls (according to Lao belief, each human being has 32 souls) to attract beneficial influences towards you, and will then tie a cotton string around your wrist symbolizing the wishes he’ll have formulated in your favor.

Day 10: Luang Prabang – Elephant Conservation Center

After travelling from Luang Prabang you’ll arrive at Nam Tien pier, then after a short boat trip, you’ll reach the Elephant Conservation Center. You’ll have time to settle into your private bungalow before your specialist guide takes you to the forest to show you the center and its inhabitants. You’ll discover the resident mother and baby at the nursery, then you’ll take the boat back to the Center for the hospital visit, where you’ll meet the Laotian Vet Assistant or Biologist, who will tell you more about common and uncommon injuries and their respective treatments. You’ll then observe the elephants’ daily bath and learn more about the elephants’ playful characters. After that, you’ll have the opportunity for some soft interaction with the mahouts by your side. After a short hike in the forest, the mahouts will decide on a place where the elephants can graze for a while. Before dinner, you’ll have the opportunity to walk in the surroundings, or go for a swim in the lake, take a canoe, or visit the museum of the conservation center.

Day 11: Elephant Conservation Center – Luang Prabang

Today you’ll meet up with the elephants in the forest. After spending the night grazing in the jungle, it is time for another bath. Enjoy strolling together with these magnificent creatures in their natural environment. Follow the guide around the perimeter to learn more about the group and its dynamics. Take your time on the different platforms to see how a new herd is being formed. This rare opportunity will bring you closer to their natural life. After some time to relax, you’ll travel back to Luang Prabang.

Day 12: Luang Prabang, Pak Ou

Today, you’ll enjoy a unique fishing experience using only local equipment and no modern techniques. Discover the two types of nets used by locals: the cast net, locally called ‘’Hae’’ and the gill net, locally called ‘’Mong’’. The local fishing expert will teach you how to use their traditional net which opens into a circle upon throwing and landing in the water. After the demonstration, walk along the river bank and try to catch a fish yourself. You’ll be eating the catch of the day for lunch so make sure you catch something!

After lunch, grab a paddle, climb into a kayak and push off from the riverbank. You’ll kayak for about three hours down a calm stretch of the Nam Ou past small villages, farms, and lush vegetation before arriving at the towering cliffs near the confluence of the river with the larger Mekong. Along the way, don’t forget to wave and shout “Sabaidee!” to any locals who are out fishing or working on their riverside farms. Feel dwarfed by the scale of the limestone formations as you float peacefully past them and then drift out into the mighty Mekong and across to the mysterious Pak Ou Caves where you’ll be see thousands of Buddha statues gazing out through the cave entrance and over the murky waters. Finally, continue down the river and beach your kayak on the sand and travel back to Luang Prabang by road.

Day 13: Luang Prabang, Kuang Sy

Noodles and rice are two of the main staples of the Southeast Asian diet. They are as important to the locals as bread is to the Europeans. Travel down a small dirt trail to reach an idyllic organic rice farm. Upon arrival you’ll be met by the charismatic Hmong farmer called Lao Lee. He’ll take you into his fields and guide you through the many steps needed to grow healthy rice and turn it into delicious noodles. You’ll learn how to germinate the seeds before jumping into the mud to plough a field with a buffalo and transplant some young seedlings while singing traditional farming songs. After this, you’ll move on to a more mature field where you’ll learn how to harvest the rice plants and thrash them to separate the seeds. Then, collect the grains and use the traditional tools to ground it to a fine powder before fermenting it and turning it into a sticky paste. The next step, with assistance from the noodle master, is to turn the paste into noodles and cook them with fresh vegetables from the farm’s organic garden. Last but not least, sit down, relax and enjoy your delicious freshly made bowl of noodle soup!

After your noodle soup snack, you’ll continue to the Kuang Sy waterfalls, one of the highlights of Luang Prabang. These cascading falls are made up of limestone formations and numerous turquoise-colored pools, and have become a must-see destination for those visiting northern Laos. The lower level of the falls has been turned into a public park and is where you’ll take a break and enjoy the shade and the refreshingly cool atmosphere of the falls. However, the main point of interest is further up the path: numerous small, natural, limestone pools which have been formed by the process of water erosion. Enjoy your surroundings and spend some time swimming and relaxing in some of the pools.

On the way back to town you’ll stop at the Ock Pop Tok Weaving Craft Centre, a great place to visit if you are interested in traditional Lao handicrafts. At the center you’ll have the chance to discover the beauty and secrets of Lao textiles – a local guide will explain to you each step of the silk weaving and natural dyeing processes. He’ll also talk to you about batik drawing and bamboo weaving, and you’ll learn how the people work by watching them actually create the handicrafts.

Then, head across to the scenic Mekong River Terrace where you can enjoy a relaxing sunset cocktail with stunning river views. You’ll be provided with delicious beverages and Lao snacks which you can enjoy as the sun sheds its final rays and drops behind the jungle clad hills on the far side of the river. This special moment will give you the chance to truly experience the peaceful Lao atmosphere and unwind after a beautiful day in paradise.

Day 14 – Departure

All good things must come to an end, and sadly, today you’ll be leaving Laos, taking with you your souvenirs and the amazing memories you made during your stay here. After checking out of your hotel you’ll meet your driver and guide and travel to Luang Prabang airport for your outbound flight.

Duration of “Visit Vat Phou” – Usually around 1h 30min depending on guests’ level of interest and physical ability as there are some steep uneven steps to climb to the top.
Stops at Ban Ponsaad and Vat Hatxaikhun are usually of about 20 minutes duration each.

After another short boat trip you’ll have the opportunity to stop and discover the old Keng Koum temple, which mixes Buddhist and Hindu influences, before continuing further down the Mekong River to Don Thorlathee Island, where local villagers make their livings by selling bamboo handicrafts. After another short cruise to reach Don Xang Island, you’ll be able to enjoy a stroll in a natural environment before continuing on to Don Khone.

On Done Khone Island you’ll begin with a visit to the famous Liphi waterfalls and the old locomotive from the French colonial era before continuing to the southern small village of Ban Hang Khone where you’ll navigate on a boat among the islands near the Cambodian border and may have the chance to observe the Irrawaddy dolphins. All along the way, absorb the scenes of local life and enjoy incredible views of the Mekong River. Finally, head across the river and visit the mighty Khonephapheng Waterfalls, the largest in Southeast Asia in terms of volume of water, before driving back to your hotel on Don Khong Island.

Day 5: Siphandon – Bolaven Plateau

This morning you’ll head north to the higher altitude volcanic plateau of the Bolaven. This area is renowned for its altitude and subsequent cool weather. Offering a nice break from the heat of the lowlands during the dry season it is also famed for its coffee plantations and its myriad of waterfalls, each more stunning than the last. Located east of Pakse, you’ll have the opportunity to discover two of the most impressive falls of the Plateau. Emerging from the jungle, the twin 120-meter Tad Fane waterfalls are believed to be amongst the highest in the country. After Tad Fane, continue to Tad Yuang waterfall, which cascades into a 60-meter-deep gorge which stretches through the surrounding National Biodiversity Conservation Area. After making your way down the stairs to the bottom, you’ll have the chance to admire the scenery offered by the natural environment from the viewing point, or relax at the panoramic restaurant, tasting the famous coffee.

Day 6: Mystic Mountain Coffee

Today, you’ll start in Paksong, the Laotian capital of coffee production and the main gateway to the Bolaven plateau, located at an altitude of 1,300 meters. This region, as authentic as it is beautiful, is now inhabited by different Mon-Khmer ethnic groups but originally the French colonists planted coffee, banana and rubber trees there. Nowadays, the coffee produced on this land is globally recognized. The Bolaven area is rich in hidden treasures that are to be found off the beaten track, and you have to travel by Jeep to discover the best of them. You’ll be welcomed by a passionate coffee farmer who will lead you to discover a magnificent and impressive waterfall where you can bathe and relax before continuing to see his land. You’ll stride across his plantations and watch a traditional coffee roasting. Then, you’ll head off for a short walk to explore the small paths surrounded by plantations, fields and forest and which eventually lead to your lunch site, set amidst stunning natural scenery. Once you’ve had your fill of delicious local dishes, your guide will take you to explore the Phu Sanark volcano where you’ll have the ideal position to enjoy the sunset over the plateau. Your day will finish at a local house, isolated at the top of the plateau and surrounded by coffee plantations. The family will show you the best of Laos’ hospitality and invite you to cook some local dishes with them.

Day 7: Mystic Mountain Coffee

Today, you’ll wake up with a delicious cup of coffee before going to see the incredible views of the highlands offered by the Phu Khatok and Phu Khate volcanoes. After lunch, you’ll jump back in your Jeep for a sensational excursion to the far reaches of the Bolaven plateau to visit remote bamboo villages of the Laven and Souay ethnic minorities where you’ll feel like you have stepped back in the time. From here you’ll finish your exploration of the Bolaven and head to your hotel.

Day 8: Pakse – Luang Prabang

Who said Pakse was just a stopover destination in the South of Laos? There are a lot of beautiful and interesting things to discover in the city and its surroundings for those, like you, who take the time to stop and look around! You’ll travel to Vat Luang, the main temple of the district, before continuing to Ban Don Khor, a village reputed for its sand stone carvings created using traditional methods for several decades. Walk through the village, greet the many families who are hard at work, and discover a giant Buddha statue located in Vat Chompet and which is worshipped by the local people. Later, after driving through the large avenues of Pakse surrounded by the mountains, you’ll reach the top of Phou Salao hill where you can enjoy the most impressive viewpoint of the city and the Mekong River.

Finally, you’ll travel to Pakse Airport for your flight to the magical UNESCO World Heritage town of Luang Prabang in the mountainous north of the country.

Day 9: Luang Prabang

In the early morning, you’ll travel with your guide to the temple to see the Tak Bath ceremony. During the ceremony, devoted residents of Luang Prabang kneel on the sidewalk, bearing food in their hands, which they offer to the monks as they walk by clad in their saffron-orange robes. Be drawn into this culturally significant moment, as it takes place in a peaceful and respectful manner, with no words exchanged between the monks and the inhabitants making the offerings. After this humbling experience, your guide will take you to a local market, a very animated place to be in the morning, to say the least.

After the market tour, you’ll be taken to a welcoming local restaurant beside the Mekong River to try a soup designed to quell your hunger and give you energy for the day. If you’re not up to soup in the morning, you can also just enjoy a coffee while watching the daily routine of the residents. After this, you can return to your hotel for your full breakfast.

After breakfast, head out for a tour of the city by tuk-tuk. The city of Luang Prabang is one of the most beautiful cities in Southeast Asia, with its perfect location at the meeting point of the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers and at the foot of an age-old mountain range. Your discovery of Luang Prabang will take you into its most emblematic and culturally-rich sites. In order to fully appreciate your visit of this picturesque city, a guide will share all his knowledge of the city’s history, architecture, and culture with you. On your tour you’ll visit Vat Visoun, the oldest temple in the city, and which stands apart from the others thanks to That Makmo, a stone stupa representing a lotus flower. Afterwards, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view over the city of Luang Prabang and its surroundings, after climbing the 328 steps leading to the top of the Mount Phousi. Then, visit Vat Mai, a respected shrine topped with an amazing roof and which was built at the end of the XVIII century. Later, stop at The Royal Palace, which nowadays houses the National Museum, and has a huge collection of precious items which formerly belonged to the royal family, as well as a large array of statuettes discovered in the temples of the region. Here, you can lay eyes on the Prabang Buddha, considered the most sacred artefact of Laos, and which has given its name to the city. Finally, continue on to Vat Xieng Thong, the temple of the Royal City, a complex of sacred shrines and temples, displaying some of the finest Lao traditional art, and without any doubt, the most beautiful site of Luang Prabang.

In the evening, you’ll be invited to attend a Baci (Sou Khouan) ceremony, one of the most popular traditions in Laos and which accompanies any important life event: weddings, funerals, births, illnesses, trips, etc. The ceremony usually takes place amongst a handful of people, with one or two ‘recipients’, the ‘officiate’ and a few ‘assistants. But for larger occasions, such as weddings, they can gather dozens of people. During the ceremony you attend, the officiating person will recall your souls (according to Lao belief, each human being has 32 souls) to attract beneficial influences towards you, and will then tie a cotton string around your wrist symbolizing the wishes he’ll have formulated in your favor.

Day 10: Luang Prabang – Elephant Conservation Center

After travelling from Luang Prabang you’ll arrive at Nam Tien pier, then after a short boat trip, you’ll reach the Elephant Conservation Center. You’ll have time to settle into your private bungalow before your specialist guide takes you to the forest to show you the center and its inhabitants. You’ll discover the resident mother and baby at the nursery, then you’ll take the boat back to the Center for the hospital visit, where you’ll meet the Laotian Vet Assistant or Biologist, who will tell you more about common and uncommon injuries and their respective treatments. You’ll then observe the elephants’ daily bath and learn more about the elephants’ playful characters. After that, you’ll have the opportunity for some soft interaction with the mahouts by your side. After a short hike in the forest, the mahouts will decide on a place where the elephants can graze for a while. Before dinner, you’ll have the opportunity to walk in the surroundings, or go for a swim in the lake, take a canoe, or visit the museum of the conservation center.

Day 11: Elephant Conservation Center – Luang Prabang

Today you’ll meet up with the elephants in the forest. After spending the night grazing in the jungle, it is time for another bath. Enjoy strolling together with these magnificent creatures in their natural environment. Follow the guide around the perimeter to learn more about the group and its dynamics. Take your time on the different platforms to see how a new herd is being formed. This rare opportunity will bring you closer to their natural life. After some time to relax, you’ll travel back to Luang Prabang.

Day 12: Luang Prabang, Pak Ou

Today, you’ll enjoy a unique fishing experience using only local equipment and no modern techniques. Discover the two types of nets used by locals: the cast net, locally called ‘’Hae’’ and the gill net, locally called ‘’Mong’’. The local fishing expert will teach you how to use their traditional net which opens into a circle upon throwing and landing in the water. After the demonstration, walk along the river bank and try to catch a fish yourself. You’ll be eating the catch of the day for lunch so make sure you catch something!

After lunch, grab a paddle, climb into a kayak and push off from the riverbank. You’ll kayak for about three hours down a calm stretch of the Nam Ou past small villages, farms, and lush vegetation before arriving at the towering cliffs near the confluence of the river with the larger Mekong. Along the way, don’t forget to wave and shout “Sabaidee!” to any locals who are out fishing or working on their riverside farms. Feel dwarfed by the scale of the limestone formations as you float peacefully past them and then drift out into the mighty Mekong and across to the mysterious Pak Ou Caves where you’ll be see thousands of Buddha statues gazing out through the cave entrance and over the murky waters. Finally, continue down the river and beach your kayak on the sand and travel back to Luang Prabang by road.

Day 13: Luang Prabang, Kuang Sy

Noodles and rice are two of the main staples of the Southeast Asian diet. They are as important to the locals as bread is to the Europeans. Travel down a small dirt trail to reach an idyllic organic rice farm. Upon arrival you’ll be met by the charismatic Hmong farmer called Lao Lee. He’ll take you into his fields and guide you through the many steps needed to grow healthy rice and turn it into delicious noodles. You’ll learn how to germinate the seeds before jumping into the mud to plough a field with a buffalo and transplant some young seedlings while singing traditional farming songs. After this, you’ll move on to a more mature field where you’ll learn how to harvest the rice plants and thrash them to separate the seeds. Then, collect the grains and use the traditional tools to ground it to a fine powder before fermenting it and turning it into a sticky paste. The next step, with assistance from the noodle master, is to turn the paste into noodles and cook them with fresh vegetables from the farm’s organic garden. Last but not least, sit down, relax and enjoy your delicious freshly made bowl of noodle soup!

After your noodle soup snack, you’ll continue to the Kuang Sy waterfalls, one of the highlights of Luang Prabang. These cascading falls are made up of limestone formations and numerous turquoise-colored pools, and have become a must-see destination for those visiting northern Laos. The lower level of the falls has been turned into a public park and is where you’ll take a break and enjoy the shade and the refreshingly cool atmosphere of the falls. However, the main point of interest is further up the path: numerous small, natural, limestone pools which have been formed by the process of water erosion. Enjoy your surroundings and spend some time swimming and relaxing in some of the pools.

On the way back to town you’ll stop at the Ock Pop Tok Weaving Craft Centre, a great place to visit if you are interested in traditional Lao handicrafts. At the center you’ll have the chance to discover the beauty and secrets of Lao textiles – a local guide will explain to you each step of the silk weaving and natural dyeing processes. He’ll also talk to you about batik drawing and bamboo weaving, and you’ll learn how the people work by watching them actually create the handicrafts.

Then, head across to the scenic Mekong River Terrace where you can enjoy a relaxing sunset cocktail with stunning river views. You’ll be provided with delicious beverages and Lao snacks which you can enjoy as the sun sheds its final rays and drops behind the jungle clad hills on the far side of the river. This special moment will give you the chance to truly experience the peaceful Lao atmosphere and unwind after a beautiful day in paradise.

Day 14 – Departure

All good things must come to an end, and sadly, today you’ll be leaving Laos, taking with you your souvenirs and the amazing memories you made during your stay here. After checking out of your hotel you’ll meet your driver and guide and travel to Luang Prabang airport for your outbound flight.
