This experience provides an in-depth discovery of Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi with the help of pre-loaded itineraries on the smartphone of the travelers. With clear GPS routing and indications (including pictures & videos) on the navigation & points of interest, this itinerary focuses on exploring the beautiful countryside and the stunning natural wonders in and around Nong Khiaw and nearby Muang Ngoi. The highlights of this adventure are the river cruise to Muang Ngoi along the picturesque Nam Ou River and the hike through the rice fields of Ban Na. These are complemented by a visit to Phatok Cave – a hideout from the Indochina War – and a hike to a stunning panoramic viewpoint overlooking Nong Khiaw and considered by many to be the best viewpoint in Laos. A visit to Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi provides travelers with a unique and unforgettable experience, on their own and at their own pace and without the need for a local guide.

  • All of the hikes are of an easy-medium level – accessible to everyone who is in ok shape and can walk for several hours – technical details can be seen in the program texts.
  • We must use Nong Khiaw Riverside as the accommodation as that is where the activities start
  • Best included in a self-guided tour program to Laos or combined with other destinations.
  • On this tour travelers will be responsible for paying for their own entrance fees.
  • This tour cannot be done in the rainy season as everywhere is too muddy, slippery and there are leeches.
  • Developed as one of the first products in our self-guided project for Laos.
  • If travelers are not really adventurous or are worried they can’t navigate by themselves, it’s possible to do this module with a guide!

Important notes

  • Day 1: Driver will pick-up the travelers at 08:00 in the lobby of their hotel. Drive to Nong Khiaw. Lunch at a local restaurant near the hotel. After lunch, go to Phatok Cave. Then, return to hotel for check-in.
  • Day 2: Waiting day for the driver. Nothing for the driver to do. Boat driver needs to pick up travelers from the Nong Khiaw Riverside hotel Pier – he should meet them at the reception at 08:00. He should stay somewhere visible in Muang Ngoi so he is easy to find when the travelers return from the hike.
  • Day 3: Driver will pick-up travelers at around 13:00 and drive back to Luang Prabang

Day X: Luang Prabang – Nong Khiaw
Meet your driver in the lobby at 08:00 and set off on your journey to Nong Khiaw. When you arrive, have lunch at one of the local restaurants by the bridge before continuing on to Phatok Cave, just 2.5 kilometers out of the town. The cave was used as a headquarters by the Lao communist command during the War, as well as a shelter for villagers during American bombing raids. Click on the “Phatok Cave” tab below to learn more about it’s history. After you’ve visited the cave, head back into Nong Khiaw town and check in to your riverside hotel. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy!

Day X: Nong Khiaw – Muang Ngoi – Nong Khiaw
Today, you’ll travel up the Nam Ou River to Muang Ngoi, a peaceful riverside village where your 10 kilometer roundtrip hike to Ban Na Village will start. You’ll meet your boat driver at the reception at 08:00 for the 1 hour cruise. Before you leave don’t forget to get a sandwich and some water! When you arrive at the Muang Ngoi boat pier open the “Hike to Ban Na Village” activity and follow the instructions – they will guide you through the beautiful countryside and the rice fields to Ban Na and then back to Muang Ngoi. When you arrive back in Muang Ngoi, find your boat driver and cruise back to Nong Khiaw.

Distance and duration of the hike: Approximately 10 kilometers – 4 to 5 hours
Elevation: 160 meters of accumulated ascent, 160 meters of accumulated descent.

Notes: Have an early night tonight as you’ll want to start bright and early tomorrow – around 06:00 to avoid the heat and to get the best chance of viewing the clouds from above.

Day X: Nong Khiaw – Luang Prabang
Rise and shine! Start your day off bright and early with a 3-4 hour roundtrip hike to the viewpoint at the top of the mountain, 460 meters above the hotel! Enjoy the adventurous feeling of climbing at your own rhythm up a hill covered with a lush forest. Along the trail, you’ll find places to sit and rest on bamboo benches and get your breath back. At the top you’ll be rewarded with a stunning 360-degree panoramic view of Nong Khiaw and the Nam Ou River winding through the surrounding mountains! When you get back down, head to the hotel to have a refreshing shower and check out at 11:00. Leave your luggage at the reception and enjoy a drink and an early lunch (or late breakfast) before meeting your driver at 13:00 for the journey back to Luang Prabang.
