The newly launched rail connection between Bangkok and Vientiane marks an important development in travel between Thailand and Laos. As of July 19th, 2024, trains depart every evening from the Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal Station in Bangkok and arrive at the new Tai-Lao Khamsavath Train Station, just outside the Lao capital of Vientiane, at 09:05 the following morning.
Travelers will have to disembark for an immigration checkpoint upon crossing the bridge over the Mekong River from either country before reboarding the train to their final destination. The new train line significantly improves the overland connection between Thailand and Laos, making it easier than ever before to offer exciting itineraries that combine both destinations.
A night-train crossing such as this offers several other benefits for travelers. Of course, the main advantage of a ‘sleeper train’ is economical, in that the accommodation for the evening and the mode of transport are the same thing.
