Thailand–Cambodia Border Issues: Travel Advisory Update

The situation on the ground remains calm following the 72-hour ceasefire agreed by Thai and Cambodian authorities on December 27. While the ceasefire expired at noon local time today and exchanges to date have been constructive, we remain cautiously optimistic and continue to monitor developments closely.

What you need to know:

• Tourism activities continue to operate normally across Cambodia and Thailand, with no impact on major tourist destinations.
• Siem Reap town, the Angkor Archaeological Park, and other key tourism areas remain safe and fully operational.
• Travelers currently in destination are continuing their itineraries safely, comfortably without any difficulty.
• As a standard safety approach, existing precautionary measures and limited itinerary adjustments remain in place and are reviewed continuously in line with official guidance.

Please note: Some official travel advisories refer to northern areas of Siem Reap province, which can be confusing. These references concern remote border zones and do not apply to Siem Reap city or Angkor, which remain unaffected.

Additional information has been reported over the past few days regarding isolated security incidents in northern Cambodia, including areas near the border and the northern edge of Siem Reap province.

These incidents remain confined to remote locations and have no impact on major tourism destinations or ongoing travel operations. Activities continue as planned outside the limited areas concerned.

What you need to know:

• The reported incidents are localized and remain far from sites and regions frequented by travelers.
• Daily life and tourism activities continue normally in Siem Reap and the Angkor region, as well as in Phnom Penh, Kampot, Battambang, and the southern islands.
• Travelers currently in Cambodia are continuing their itineraries without difficulty.
• As a precaution, Easia Travel has temporarily adjusted certain routes.

There are no new developments to report in Thailand. While travelers are advised to follow local guidance, conditions across the rest of the country remain safe, with tourism activities operating as usual in all key destinations.

The situation along the Thailand–Cambodia border saw renewed attention following additional reports of military activity in the frontier zone.

These developments remain limited to the same remote area and do not affect our current travel routes or ongoing operations.

• Land border crossings remain closed, while flights continue to operate normally.

Update – November 14, 2025, 10:30 AM – Bangkok time (GMT +7)

A recent border incident earlier this week led to renewed headlines and heightened political rhetoric. While this has brought the situation back into the news cycle, conditions on the ground remain as they have been in recent weeks and months.

Both Thailand and Cambodia continue to operate normally, with no impact on travel in major destinations. The tensions remain confined to remote frontier areas far from any of our programs or operational routes.

What you need to know:

• The situation in both countries remains safe and stable for travelers with daily life and travel operations in major tourism hubs remain unaffected.
• As a precaution, we are extending the suspension of visits to sites close to the border, including Preah Vihear area, until March 31, 2026.
• Our teams are currently reviewing all programs and making adjustments as needed. Should any changes be required, we will proactively reach out.
• Land border crossings remain closed, as they have been for several months.

Flights between Thailand and Cambodia continue to operate normally. Several claims circulating on social media this week suggesting otherwise are incorrect and should be treated as misinformation.

Update – August 18, 2025, 10:30 AM – Bangkok time (GMT +7)

The border situation between Thailand and Cambodia remains stable, with both countries continuing to uphold the ceasefire and engage in diplomatic dialogue.

Land crossings between Thailand and Cambodia remain closed or severely restricted, with most checkpoints – including Poipet, Chong Chom, and Chong Sa Ngam – still inactive following escalating tensions in July.

Air travel between both countries continues to operate normally.

Meanwhile, the temporary nationwide drone ban in Thailand, initially in place from 30 July to 15 August, has now been partially lifted. From 16 to 31 August 2025, drone operations are once again permitted, but only under strict conditions, including:

– Valid registration with CAAT and NBTC
– Flight only in authorized zones
– Prior notification to authorities at least 3 days in advance
– Respect for altitude limits and no-fly zones near sensitive areas (e.g. airports, military zones, border areas)

Update – August 7, 2025, 11 AM – Bangkok time (GMT +7)

Representatives from Thailand and Cambodia are currently attending the General Border Committee (GBC) meeting in Malaysia, with observers from the U.S., China, and Malaysia present to support transparency and build mutual trust.

Yesterday, both sides reached initial agreements on key security and coordination efforts, which can be seen as an encouraging sign of progress toward lasting stability.

We are closely monitoring the situation and will continue to share updates as new and reliable information becomes available.

Update – August 5, 2025, 11 AM – Bangkok time (GMT +7)

On August 4, defense officials from Thailand and Cambodia officially began General Border Committee talks in Malaysia, aiming to solidify the recently declared ceasefire. Further high-level discussions at the ministerial level are scheduled later this week, showing a continued commitment to de-escalation and dialogue.

Our team is closely monitoring these developments through reliable sources and maintaining close contact with our local teams. The safety of the travelers and staff remains our top priority, and we continue to operate with care in all affected areas.

Update – August 1, 2025, 4 PM – Bangkok time (GMT +7)

The ceasefire is a positive step forward, though we remain vigilant and continue to monitor developments closely.

Life in Siem Reap and throughout Cambodia remains unaffected, with travel running smoothly. We have made minor itinerary adjustments to avoid certain border areas, including Preah Vihear, Banteay Chhmar, and land border crossings.

Additionally, please note that drone use is temporarily prohibited across Thailand from 30 July to 15 August 2025 (or until further notice) as a precautionary safety measure. We advise travelers not to bring or operate drones during this period.

Update – July 29, 2025, 6 PM – Bangkok time (GMT +7)

Following peace talks in Malaysia, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an unconditional and immediate ceasefire on July 28.

This is a positive step forward and a welcome sign of de-escalation along the border.

While this is very encouraging, the situation on the ground remains tense and the conflict is not yet fully resolved. We therefore continue to closely monitor the situation and maintain all current precautions, particularly for Preah Vihear and Bantey Chmaar.

All land border crossings remain closed, though domestic and international air travel is unaffected.

Travel remains safe in all major destinations across Cambodia and Thailand.

Update – July 28, 2025, 9:45 PM – Bangkok time (GMT +7)

According to multiple media reports, Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire”. This marks a positive step toward peace and reconciliation.

We will share a further update tomorrow should any new developments arise.

Update – July 28, 2025, 3:00 PM – Bangkok time (GMT +7)

Clashes between Cambodian and Thai forces continued over the weekend though they have remained confined to remote border areas. Peace talks are scheduled for today, 28 July, in Malaysia, to discuss a path toward de-escalation and peace.

While several embassies have published travel advisories, these only concern areas located within 50 km of the border.

Preah Vihear and Baentey Chmaar areas fall within the currently restricted zone and access to both sites has been suspended. Easia Travel has already adjusted all affected itineraries, and our teams have proactively contacted impacted partners to provide alternative arrangements.

All other tourism destinations across Cambodia and Thailand remain fully operational and safe. International and domestic flights continue to run normally. Travelers currently in-country are safe, and no clashes or incidents have occurred outside the affected border zone.

Update – July 25, 2025, 6:00 PM – Bangkok time (GMT +7)

There have been no significant changes since yesterday regarding the armed clashes in remote areas along the Cambodia–Thailand border. The situation remains contained to the same regions as previously reported.

These areas are far from any itineraries. Our teams remain fully alert and ready to proactively communicate and make any necessary adjustments as the situation evolves.

We will be monitoring the situation over the weekend.

Update – July 24, 2025, 3:00 PM – Bangkok time (GMT +7)

On July 24, military clashes occurred near the ancient Prasat Ta Muen Thom temple, located on the border between Surin province in Thailand and Oddar Meanchey province in Cambodia.

All official land crossings are temporarily closed, and travelers are advised to avoid overland routes. This has led to confusion in media reporting, but it is important to note that air travel between the two countries remains fully operational, and domestic travel within both nations continues safely.

Update – June 30, 2025

There have been no significant developments concerning the Thailand–Cambodia border situation. Land border crossings have been closed since June 23rd; however, air travel and domestic transportation within both countries are operating as usual.

Travel remains safe in both destinations, and our local teams are actively monitoring the situation to ensure smooth operations and timely updates if anything changes.

An important update regarding the Cambodia–Thailand land border

Due to an ongoing border dispute between the two nations, political tensions have risen in recent weeks. In response, Thai authorities have implemented significantly tighter controls at several land crossings with Cambodia. While these borders have not been officially closed, border operations have become more restrictive, confusing various media reports.

The situation is evolving daily, and due to this ongoing uncertainty, we advise against planning any overland travel between the two countries until it stabilizes. Travellers may otherwise potentially face unexpected disruptions and serious inconvenience to their travel plans.

That said, we would like to reassure our partners and clients that travel within Thailand and Cambodia remains completely safe, and that our operations in both destinations continue as usual.

Air Travel Unaffected

Despite conflicting media reports, flights between Thailand and Cambodia operate normally. There are no restrictions on air travel, and all scheduled routes continue as usual.

Safety Within Both Countries

Traveling within Thailand and Cambodia is safe. The disputed border areas, which are instigating the political tension, are remote and not part of our standard itineraries.

No Immediate Changes Required

We have reviewed all current files and found no scheduled overland border crossings in the next two months. The situation will be reassessed in good time for future departures.
