THAILAND: New Flood Warning Issued

October 9th, 2024: Floodwaters have now receded, though substantial cleanup efforts are underway due to the mud and debris left behind. Cleanup operations are progressing rapidly, and we expect the city to look back to normal within the week.

Several riverside areas were impacted by the floods. As cleanup and damage assessments continue, some businesses are temporarily closed for repairs. Depending on the extent of the damage, some places may reopen within weeks, while others that were more significantly affected aim to resume operations by early December. We are closely monitoring these updates and adjusting affected bookings as needed. Impacted riverside establishments include various restaurants and the Elephant Nature Park. Specific hotels affected are: Anantara Chiang Mai, 137 Pillars House, The Empress, Raya Heritage, and Shewe Wana. Should you have any questions, please reach out to your dedicated Sales contact.

Moving forward, we do not recommend cancelling trips to Chiang Mai. While certain properties may remain closed, the city is on a swift path to recovery. Besides, the tourism and business brought by visitors will be essential in supporting Chiang Mai and its residents as they rebuild and recover from this event.

October 7th, 2024: Water levels are now below 4m and draining away in most areas. Some roads that were closed have now been reopened. With little to no rain forecast in the northern region in the next week, water is expected to recede further over the coming days, with the last of the flooding fully dissipated by 10 October, although most places will be dry before that.

For now, there is not a need to change the route of any current itineraries, as we expected the situation will return to normal very soon. Our next steps are checking the readiness of affected businesses and finding alternatives for any necessary re-bookings.

October 5th, 2024: Despite no clear warning from authorities, water levels have surpassed the highest expected level that was communicated and are still rising.

We are actively managing the situation to ensure the safety and comfort of all travelers. Our team on the ground is in the process of adjusting accommodations and rerouting trips for upcoming bookings in the next few days.

As of now, the riverside area is experiencing some disruption, including road closures and traffic challenges. We’re actively reaching out to our clients, offering alternative accommodation options or adjusting their itineraries as needed. In areas currently affected or at risk, we have initiated evacuations to ensure everyone’s safety. While official updates are limited, the forecast suggests the situation will improve in the coming days with less rain expected. Rest assured, we are continuously monitoring the developments and will proactively contact clients with any necessary updates as the situation evolves.

October 3rd, 2024: Thai authorities have issued a notice that another wave of floods is expected to affect certain areas in the north of the country in the coming days. This is due to further rainfall and water runoff from higher elevations heading toward Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai. At this time, there is no need to adjust any itineraries or cancel trips. Should this change, we will inform you immediately.

From the 7th to the 8th of September 2024, Typhoon Yagi swept across northern Vietnam, Laos and Thailand but left Cambodia unscathed. The typhoon caused loss of life in communities throughout the region, as well as substantial damage to infrastructure in key tourist areas. In the wake of the storm, authorities reacted quickly, making every effort to keep people safe and return life to normal as quickly as possible, including for international travelers.

At the time of writing, we can now report that the situation is stable. We would like to extend our deepest condolences to those people and communities who were affected by Typhoon Yagi. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this time.

Impact and Latest Updates

Vietnam

When Typhoon Yagi made landfall, it caused considerable damage in several Vietnamese provinces. Coastal areas, especially Quang Ninh Province, faced tidal surges and flooding that disrupted transport and damaged buildings. Mountainous regions in the north, such as Sapa, Cao Bang, and Ba Be saw widespread landslides, blocked roads, and power outages.

Other tourist areas such as Hai Phong were also greatly affected, with tours and activities suspended soon after the storm began its approach. Emergency teams were dispatched to help with the evacuation efforts of residents that lived in the areas affected by the typhoon, as the storm also caused disruptions to transport links, temporarily limiting mobility in the region. Northern Vietnam was hit by the typhoon directly, making it the most affected area in the region.

This storm was really unexpected. While the central region often sees rough weather this time of year, it’s rare for such a storm to impact the North. However, thanks to swift action by the authorities, the situation was quickly stabilized. I’m also very proud of my team, whose hard work and reactivity ensured the safety and comfort of every traveler’ in our care while minimizing disruptions to their experience in Vietnam

The situation has stabilized and continues to improve in the weeks since Typhoon Yagi hit Northern Vietnam. While repairs to infrastructure in some regions are still ongoing, our scheduled tours and activities are operating as normal. The most affected areas are well within the recovery phase, with local authorities working to fully restore infrastructure and services. Operations have resumed in most tourist destinations, such as Halong Bay and Ninh Binh, and transportation networks are almost completely back to normal.

Recovery in Halong Bay

Most tourist spots in Halong Bay have reopened to welcome visitors. Though recovery efforts are still ongoing in certain areas, the situation is almost back to normal. Some waiting rooms in Tuan Chau port were destroyed during the storm, for example, and trash washed ashore. Also, a few sunken ships are still being salvaged. Fortunately, our suppliers sustained minimal damage and have resumed activities, collaborating closely with local authorities to clean the bay.

Cruise operations have resumed, with four out of five routes back in service (the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th routes). Among these 5 routes, Route 1, Route 2, and Route 4 are the most common for travelers and cruise operators. Route 3, which remains closed at the time of writing, is mostly for private cruise tours. No indication is yet available as to when this route will reopen. Popular spots such as Thien Cung Cave, Dau Go Cave, Ti Top Island, Sung Sot Cave, Luon Cave, and Trinh Nu Cave are once again accessible.

Laos

Northern Laos has also been navigating the aftermath of Typhoon Yagi, which brought significant rainfall and strong winds to the region. Certain communities, particularly around Luang Prabang, experienced localized flooding and minor landslides. Despite this, local businesses and accommodations have remained resilient, ensuring that travelers can continue to explore the country’s rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes safely and comfortably.

Thailand

Following Typhoon Yagi, areas of northern Thailand, including popular areas like Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, have faced heavy rains and localized flooding. While the tourism sector has largely recovered, with key destinations fully operational, some businesses were more affected than others. For instance, The Riverie by Katathani in Chiang Rai remains open as usual, while The Legend Resort experienced significant damage and is currently closed for repairs. The resort has moved all existing bookings to an alternate property while focusing on rebuilding, with an expected reopening by the end of the year. We will continue to provide updates on this evolving situation as we receive new information.

Despite recent media coverage and rainfall, the impact on travelers has been minimal. Areas near rivers have seen temporary disruptions, but most tourism operations in Northern Thailand, especially in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, remain unaffected.

With the local infrastructure back to normal, travelers to all parts of Thailand can rest assured that itineraries remain intact, allowing them to fully enjoy the ‘Land of Smiles’.

A few weeks after the facts and life is back to normal, that’s the beauty of Thailand for you right there. As soon as the water came down there was a huge community cleanup effort, and everyone got back to business. If you go through Chiang Rai or even Chiang Mai today, you wouldn’t know there had been severe floods here recently.

Cambodia

Cambodia remained largely unaffected by Typhoon Yagi, experiencing only minimal weather disruptions during the storm. All of the country’s key tourist attractions, including Angkor, continue to operate as normal.
