Discover

There is something for everyone at Khao Sok National Park. Unique wildlife, peaceful getaways, awe-inspiring landscapes, and everything from an afternoon hike to an overnight trek in the jungle, in other words, Khao Sok has it all.

In this article, we will look at what makes Khao Sok National Park, what makes it so special, and the range of different experiences travelers can expect.

Go off the Grid To Find Inner Peace

Founded in 1980, Khao Sok National Park is Thailand’s 22nd national park. Located on the mainland in the south of Thailand, it is surrounded by 3 other National parks – Kaeng Krueng, Sri Phang Nga, and Khling Phanom – as well as several wildlife sanctuaries. The communal area is over 3500-kilometer square and is home to rich and diverse fauna and flora.

All that space and all that nature mean that Khao Sok is an ideal place to get away, disconnect, and find inner peace. It’s an excellent option for those trying to escape the madness of Bangkok and Phuket’s crowded beaches.

A few days in Khao Sok National Park is time spent away from all the distractions of the modern world. Whether alone, with a significant other, or with family, it’s an opportunity to reconnect with nature, recharge, and soak up the energy of one of the world’s oldest forests.

A Mecca for Nature Lovers

Khao Sok has always been off the beaten path, and it wasn’t until the 60s that roads were built. Inevitably, this meant that natural resources became easier to tap into – which is exactly what happened: plantations, logging, mining… the area’s nature was under threat.

In the 1970s, Thai students who were part of the communist insurgency found refuge in the jungles of Khao Sok National Park. Their guerilla warfare kept not only the army at bay but also the loggers, miners, and hunters at bay. These students ended up protecting the area and its wildlife and continued to do so until the government stepped in and established the Khao Sok National Park.

Today, Khao Sok National Park is home to the following:

  • over 300 species of birds,
  • close to 50 species of mammals,
  • more than 30 different species of bats,
  • some 200 wild Asian elephants,
  • as well as endangered tigers.

Hundreds of different floral species thrive in the park’s rainforest. However, the rich vegetation and wildlife are still under threat. Developing eco-tourism is one of the key initiatives that contribute to preserving the park’s fauna and flora.

At the heart of Khao Sok National Park is Cheow Larn Lake. Known for its emerald waters and towering limestone karsts, this man-made lake is nothing short of amazing. Home to over 300 different fish species, the lake offers more than just breathtaking views.
