Important notes

  • New route (following the definitive stop of operation of Krung Kasem Padung Canal Boat) : the tour is departing now from Thewet.
  • We recommend guide to take tuk tuk on spot to Wat Benchamabophit and ideally if possible pass in front Ananta Samakhom and Rama V equestrian statue to briefly explain the history of Dusit Area. (Note: Ananta Samakhom and the equestrian statue are now behind a wall, and taking photos is not allowed).
  • Guide and guests must disembark at Ratchadamnoen Nok Pier and walk to Wat Benchamabophit
  • After the Benchamabophit visit, the guide must propose to guests to choose between walking 15 minutes or taking a tuk tuk or taxi to get to Nang Loeng. We recommend walking as they will be able to pass by the impressive Government House.
  • Visit Baan Narasilp: no entrance fee but visit is not mentioned in the program: visit will be submitted to availability and agreement of owner’s family is they are available.

Guide route and please click map:

1. Starting Point at Thewet pier. Take Local Tuk Tuk on spot to Wat Benchamabophit. As the tour is about the focus on Dusit area and Nang Loeng, it’s important that the guide try to ask Tuk Tuk driver to pass in front of Ananta Samakhom Hall and Rama V Equestrian Statue to learn about the royal history.

2. Visit Wat Benchamabophit and stroll in the garden and see from far the nice pink building of Wat Benchambophit school (no visit because of Child Safe but toilets are here)

3. Go out and walk on Thanon Nakhon Patom towards Chamai Maru Bridge and the canal (Prem Prachakhon). After Wat Benchamabophit, guests who want can walk to Nang Loeng (15 minutes): an opportunity to pass in front of Government House.

In case don’t want to walk, guide can take a tuk tuk or a taxi (cheaper as guests will have already experienced tuk tuk before).

4. In case of public transportation (tuk tuk or Taxi from Wat Benchamabophit) walking, the real walking tour can start at Thanon Luk Luang Intersection and cross the bridge to Thanon Krung Kasem (scenery is nice on the canal and mark the transition between dusit and Nang Loeng area.)

5. If guests are too tired, guest can of course be drop off near the entrance Nakhon Sawan Soi 7 Take nearby Wat Sommanat and cross the street to arrive at the entrance of .
If time permits and guests are interested, they can have a look at Wat Sommanat (but it’s not the priority of this tour).

6. Enter Nakhon Sawan Soi 7 and start to experience the lively Nang Loeng area.

7. Turning right after out Nakhon Sawan Soi 7, guide must bring guests to Nang Loeng Arts shop of intriguing stone locket factory. An occasion to show a very old handycraft still now adapting a bit to modernity.

8. Crossing the street guide can then start the Nang Loeng walking tour. If guests want to try, the guide can propose some snacks to taste at the market.

9. Stop and show the shrine housed in Nang Loeng Market overlooking the foodcourt. This shrine is dedicated to Chumphon Khet Udomsak, respected as the father of the Thai navy who used to live in Nang Loeng.

10. Continue and walk to traditional thai snacks near Sala Chaloem Thani to see a lot of variety of local thai snacks

11. Sala Chaloem Thani is still behind scaffholding but start to be a bit more renovated with its beautiful wooden architecture. The guide can explain the history of this building, which was Bangkok’s first cinema and a place where all cultural life gathered.

12. Continue and walk cross Thanon Paniang to reach Wat Sunthorn. At Wat Sunthorn Thammathan, visitors can pay respect to the statue of Luang Pu Thoop, a former abbot, and the bones of the late famous actor Mitr Chaibancha. Mitr was one of Thailand’s most popular actors and starred in more than 300 movies. Born in Phetchaburi province in 1934, he moved to live with his mother in a house opposite Wat Khae Nang Loeng when he was nine. He lived there until he graduated and worked as an air force officer. He died at the age of 36 in 1970 after falling from a helicopter in a movie scene in Chon Buri.

Normally the ubosot cannot be visited, but guests can see the beautiful mural art of the temple near the cemetery. Visit of Wat Sunthorn is not the priority of the tour: only the link with Mitch Chaibancha history who was native of the area.

13. Continue passing in front of the leader or community where guests can see E-Loeng, which are large red Mon-style clay jar which gave the name to the area.

14. Going out on the temple, turning left, guests can see the quaint wooden houses typical of Nang Loeng: Baan Silapa where normally the leader of the community gives traditional Lakhon theater lessons. No visit planned but just to see. In case by any chance owner is nearby, guide can bring the clients to see the house. But never guaranteed. (not mentioned in the program)

15. Ban Ten Ram: another wooden house which is the former ballroom of Nang Loeng Community 90 years ago. No visit planned but just to see. In case by any chance owner is nearby, guide can bring the clients to see the house. But never guaranteed. (not mentioned in the program)

16. Ban Narasin. Just a few meters away lies Ban Narasilp, a little unofficial family museum, which tries to preserve the art of embroidery and traditional costumes. No visit planned but just to see. 22. After the area of old wooden houses, continue to the visit of Ban Narasilp, continue to Thanon Lan Luang and turn into Thanon Chakkrapadi Phong and pass by the traditional tea shophouse Nam Heng Lee typical of all shophouse of chinese settlers in that area

23. Continue to Thanon Chakkrapadi Phong and pass in front old printing houses shop then.

25. Continue passing in front of old local book store on Thanon Nakhon Sawan until the nice building of cultural center of Bangkok 1899 at Ban Chao Phraya Thammasakmontri where the tour can end. A Walk from Marble Temple to Nang Loeng

In the morning, embark on a unique walking tour and discover two different aspects of old Bangkok. A contrasting journey that takes you from the architectural elegance of the Dusit neighborhood to the rich cultural heritage of a century-old community. Your journey will begin by the riverside neighborhood of Thewet from where you will board a tuk tuk to Wat Benchamabophit and its dazzling marble slabs imported from Italy, which earned it the nickname “Marble Temple”. Inside, admire the beautiful image of Phra Buddha Chinnarat.
A few steps outside the temple discover a different atmosphere. Leaving the main avenues of Dusit District, arrive at Nang Loeng District and its unique market, rich in flavors and smells of traditional cuisine. Continue through small alleys, between neighborhood temples and small old houses that contain parts of the fascinating history of Nang Loeng. The area is rich in the cultural and artistic life of the past, which the inhabitants try to preserve in the present day.
