Description

Situated on the banks of the peaceful Nam Ou River, Nong Khiaw is a charming town surrounded by some of the most incredible limestone mountains in northern Laos. Thanks to its beautiful scenery, Nong Khiaw is a paradise for those looking to explore the mountains and snap that memorable vacation photo from the top of a peak.

There are a few different viewpoints close to the town, with something to suit travelers of all different levels.

Easy – Pha Noy (2h / 3km / +110m) – a smaller viewpoint that can be reached in 40-45min. Starting from the town, travelers will cross a picturesque bamboo bridge before heading off into the teak forest on well maintained trails. The ascent to the viewpoint is not long and the trail is well maintained with steps cut into the soil. At the top, there is a small wooden ladder that will take guests the last few meters to the viewpoint hut where they can relax and enjoy that well deserved drink while contemplating the magnificent vistas.

Medium – Pha Daeng (3h / 3.4km / +460m) – The most famous and popular viewpoint. It’s a 1h 30min walk to the top of the mountain on a steep and narrow path that can be done at the guests’ own pace, while enjoying the feeling of adventure as they climb up along the forested path. At the top of the mountain, there is a stunning 360-degree panoramic view over Nong Khiaw and the Ou River winding through the surrounding mountains! After a stop at the viewpoint hut at the top to contemplate the natural beauty, a 45-minute walk down will bring guests back to the town.
