Shanghai Mansion’s façade is at one with its bustling location, a busy street front bar that belies the peaceful and luxurious interior. Welcome to 1930s Shanghai, reinvented in Bangkok’s Chinatown.

Shanghai Mansion began life in 1892 as a trading house, and in 1908, it was transformed into Bangkok’s first Chinese opera house. Renowned for its spectacular interiors and popular staging of classic Chinese theatre, the opera house was frequented by members of Thailand’s Royal Family, among other members of the aristocracy. By the mid-1900s, the building transformed again, serving as Thailand’s stock exchange and a textile trading center, before becoming Yaowarat Square, a famous department store brimming with restaurants and shops peddling Chinese herbal medicine. By 1998, the building had fallen into disrepair, and in 2005, it was purchased by Burasari Group.

Rooms are spacious and as exquisitely designed as the hotel’s common areas. Deep armchairs, four poster beds, and compact but spotless bathrooms are all infused with the same stunning period feel (some bathrooms feature bird cages complete with fake doves).

Early 20th-century-style lighting and heavy maroon curtains make up for the lack of windows to the outside world. Air-conditioning, a TV, a DVD player, a minibar whose modest contents are part of the room rate, a safe, a coffee maker, and a Chinese tea set round off the picture.

Lunch, dinner, and high tea are offered in Red Rose Restaurant, where traditional Chinese dishes are served with contemporary flair and paired with daring Chinese whiskeys and crisp plum wine. Breakfast is served upstairs in ‘Cotton,’ a large, airy restaurant on the third floor with the air of a ‘colonial country club.’

Spa services are available on every level of the hotel, with signature treatments such as the Singing Bowls Ritual that promise to “awaken the body and spirit, preparing it for a soothing, therapeutic ritual ahead.”

For families:  The Family Rooms offer secondary, twin beds, and small dining tables. The hotel will visually entertain the youngest family members, from the colorful lanterns and festive bridges over the water features to the neon of this vibrant, busy neighborhood.
