Day by day description

Most villagers in the ‘dry zone’, between Bagan and Mandalay, rely on farming, but climate change has taken its toll on the agriculture, which has since become a dangerously unreliable source of revenue. In order to generate sustainable job opportunities for the young villagers and help them learn new skills, Action Aid, in partnership with the local communities, built a sustainable community lodge to welcome visitors. Meet with the local communities, observe their daily routine, share a meal with them, and explore the surroundings by bike. This is definitely a village experience that will show you a different face of Myanmar.

Selling points

  • An authentic village experience combined with a comfortable community lodge in the dry zone between Mandalay and Bagan
  • Genuine cultural immersion built around a sustainable project of ActionAid
  • Cultural immersion and a direct encounter with villages/locals by taking part to their daily life in the dry zone
  • A perfect way to connect Mandalay and Bagan with an immersive break in the village life

Selling points

  • Perfect for groups – non-touristy destination with genuine village immersion
  • Another face of Myanmar – explore the dry zone and its people
  • Travellers support a community project: a suitable project for agents which are looking for a sustainable touch in their program
  • Include it as an overnight on the way from Bagan to Mandalay or Bagan to Monywa
  • Not for every client: strong interest for CBT and simple village experiences

Include in an itinerary:

  • Optional short visit of Pakkoku on the way between Bagan and Myaing
  • Do not offer as a day excursion – clients won’t have enough time to really immerse in the village atmosphere
  • Only sell to groups – program is not “busy” enough for FIT
  • Include it as an overnight on the way from Bagan to Mandalay or Bagan to Monywa

Competitor information

The project existed prior to Intrepid Travel. After Action Aid showcased the project at several tourism fairs, Intrepid Travel agreed on sending their clients there and promoting the project. They had an exclusive contract with Intrepid for 2 years, but since then have opened up to other agencies to insure a steady number of bookings. Operate at Journey Travel in Myanmar (part of PEAK DMC – owned by Intrepid).

Rem:

  • in 2016, Intrepid sent around 72 groups, 830 pax
  • in 2017, they sent around 75 groups, 760 pax. Groups were all around 10-12 pax.

Intrepid Travel is open to let other agencies send their clients – they do not have an exclusivity anymore and Action Aid is actively looking for more partners.

Intrepid Travel is a small group adventure travel company based in Australia. After Action Aid showcased the project in several tourism fairs, Intrepid Travel agreed on creating a partnership with the CBT. They have had an exclusive contract with Intrepid for 2 years, but starting this year, they will be open to other agencies to insure a steady number of bookings.

Rem:

All bookings and payments are done through ActionAid. They redirect our bookings to the communities who deal with their own organisation.

Notes

Why is this a sustainable itinerary?

Main goals of the project

  • Build the capacity of local communities to collectively own, operate, and sustain alternative and viable livelihoods
  • Protect and preserve village priorities and the heritage of community society

The project explained: how did it start?

Yin Taung village in Myaing township is a CBT village where clients can experience the daily village life among 4 communities. Each community has around 60-65 households, which makes it possible for everyone to feel involved in the project. According to Action Aid survey, one third has been involved in the project already.

Since 2010, Action Aid has been working on activities that take on women’s rights, agriculture improvement, climate change programs (irrigation program to retain rain water), youth capacity development, and sustainable livelihood programs (apart from agriculture). There was a need to create additional revenue opportunities for the communities living in the dry zone, where villagers mainly rely on farming to make ends meet. Unfortunately, in the dry zone, farmers are facing many challenges, among them climate change, and a lack of job opportunities outside farming.

The project focuses on empowering the “mothers” of the village and creating job opportunities for villagers of the dry zone who mainly rely on the struggling farming market. The community lodge also acts as a “university” where young villagers from the communities come to receive training about hospitality and the industry.

ActionAid and the villagers are very conscious about the unsteady flow of tourists and only consider this project as secondary source of revenue. The villagers continue their farming job to avoid ending up with no revenue when tourism is slower.

How do they operate?

Once they receive the list of bookings from ActionAid (which manages the booking systems), the committees of the communities assign different groups for different tasks in order to share the profit equally among everyone who wishes to participate:

  • Who is going to cook for which group?
  • Who is going to clean the lodge?
  • Who is going to organize the activities?

Agencies send money to Action Aid which takes care of all transactions (sending invoice to agencies and receiving money). Action Aid signed a contract with the community with agreed, announced and official prices for each service.

When there is a booking, Action Aid gives the money directly to the community group taking care of the service (cooking, cleaning, traditional dance, etc.). Each community has its committee and they have a meeting every month to share experience and feedback and improve services and talk about their problems.

The Community Lodge

The opening ceremony took place on 29 Dec 2015, and the first group arrived on January 2016

The “community house” is composed of 5 bungalows of 4 rooms. Each bungalow has outside toilets and shower, as well as an outside deck to enjoy the view on the small lake and the surrounding mountains.

It was built next to the reservoir built by Action Aid as part of one of their irrigation program. Villagers didn’t feel ready to develop a homestay program, so Action Aid built the community house a bit outside of the village as a “university lodge” where the villagers would learn hospitality skills.

Showers are outside and shared. Western toilets and proper showers (no bucket showers) in clean, sturdy bamboo/rock houses. The wooden bungalows and the amenities fade perfectly into the natural background.

Each room has twin mattresses, a fan, a mosquito net, bed sheets and a thick cover – simple but comfortable amenities.

There is one big dining hall and a reception area, both built with natural material as well; everything is built with wood, bamboo, stone, etc.

A very sustainable project on several aspects:

  • Plastic free zone
  • Training on waste management
  • Water tank to refill bottles
  • Structures built with natural material

Activities to do as part of the program

Focus on “village experience” – see full itinerary in OP notes

  • Clients will meet with one of the 4 communities who live around the CBT houses
  • Optional: Conference can be held in the open dining room (capacity: 200 pax)
  • Program should be a half-day on Day 1 (arrival from Bagan mainly) and a morning on Day 2, before driving to Mandalay.

Important: clients from different agencies will be in different rooms, but it is possible that clients have to share activities with other clients. If group is big enough we can privatize the activities.

How Action Aid is supporting the project?

The project is sponsored by Action Aid, a NGO working with governments and private sector to further human rights for all and defeat poverty. Operating in Myanmar since 2000

  • Facilitate the promotion of the CBT to tourism fairs
  • Created the Community Lodge next to Yin Taung Dam reservoir
  • Training on the different aspects of tourism management:
    • Hygiene and “comfort” standards (cold food, clean places to eat, etc.)
    • Organic food and cooking (oil, MSG powder, etc.)
    • Booking arrangements
    • Finance transparency
    • Operational organization
    • Service mindset and collaboration between the communities

How clients can help?

This project allows the villagers to have access to a secondary revenue source, since they mostly rely on farming which is not enough for them. Nevertheless, Action Aid insists on the villagers not to give up on all their agricultural efforts for this project either, since tourism is not necessarily a steady income. They should balance their time between both and take the opportunity of the CBT to learn new skills (administration, booking management, communication with international clients, cooking, cleaning standards, etc.).

Future projects

They have reached the first 2 years of the project and are in a “feedback” phase and assessing what needs to be improved. They wish to improve and increase the involvement of the community by 50%.

Currently, Action Aid is dealing with all bookings and reconfirms all services with the community representatives before the arrival of every group. The purpose is to reach full independence in operating, booking, and managing all services.

Once the operational section will be running smoothly, they will have reached 80% of their goal (sustainability, people willingness, service mind-set). The communities need 2-3 years more to learn about finance and booking management (protection from corruption, mistakes, operational trouble, official processes, etc.). What will still be missing after the operational components are smooth, will be creativity and new experiences!
