DAY 1 – Arrival at the rural community

During this trip, guests will travel to a small rural community on the outskirts of Nan city. The compelling history and culture of this region goes back many centuries; the ancient kilns that can be found in the area are a testament to this. Depending on the season, various activities will give guests the opportunity to interact with local people and give an insight in the daily life in the countryside.

DAY 2 – Experience rural life

Guests start the day with an early wake-up to give alms to the monks in the local temple. After breakfast, they will join the villagers in some of the many activities they usually take part in. Depending on the season, it could be rice planting/harvesting, making sugar cane sweets, visiting an organic farm to learn about herbal balls, and even joining the weaving community.  How to sell it :

• Suitable for guests of all budgets, but an open mind and interest in culture is required (homestay, local customs, local food)
• The local community “guides” only speak Thai; Easia guide is welcome to help with translation and can join any activities FOC. Only food and accommodation needs to be paid for by Easia guide.
• Private tour
• No alternatives to the activities
• 1 activity is proposed on the first day, 3 on the second day.

Cons

• There may be a language barrier
• Only for people with an open mind and willingness to immerse themselves in Thai culture (no western food, level of comfort, etc.)
• Some activities are seasonal and subject to the weather conditions (rice planting/harvesting, etc.)
• Some activities are fun, but the end product cannot be taken home (ex. pottery workshop, needs to be fired first and takes too long to be taken home)

TIME AND TRANSPORTATION

Notes

• The village and all sites can be reached by minivan. In case a group uses a bus, local transportation needs to be used to visit the different sites. The rate for this is 500THB/day/truck, 1 truck has a capacity of 8 pax.
• Food is very local and not necessarily adapted to Western expectations (use of “pla ra”, fish bones in soup, spicy dip sauces, etc.). Requests can be made, but food will always be Thai, with no Western options.
• The village is traditional and very quiet, so not suitable for people who like “going out to party” or like the hustle and bustle of the city.
• Prepare for cold water, but many houses have a warm water shower. There are Western-style toilets available. These facilities are shared per house.

Important notes

• ALERT: For the connection to the Laos border a Lao visa is required beforehand. It is no longer possible to obtain it on arrival at the Juai Kon border.
• The program is fully customizable and villagers are flexible. But we try to set a standard program to assure smooth operation:
  • Arrive at the village in the afternoon
  • Visit Baan Jamanas, old kiln site and museum
  • Sai Ua making workshop, followed by dinner
  • Wake up early for alms giving at the local temple
  • Breakfast
  • Making herbal ball compresses activity
  • Learning bamboo weaving (or rice related activity in the season)
  • Lunch
• Activities are fun and engaging but have disadvantages: bamboo weaving is very difficult, and guests will not be able to make anything useful during a short workshop. Pottery is fun to do, but the finished products need to be fired and it may take weeks before the kiln is full, so they cannot take their pots home.

Dependiendo de la estación, puede tratarse de plantar o cosechar arroz, preparar dulces de caña de azúcar, visitar una granja orgánica y aprender sobre las bolas herbales o quizá se una a una comunidad de tejido.
