However, make sure to be back at the hotel and ready to leave at XX.XX as your driver will come to pick you up for your transfer to the train station. You will take the day train to Ayutthaya, Thailand’s ancient capital located about 80 kilometers north of Bangkok. Upon arrival you can take a tuk-tuk to the hotel, you can find them waiting outside the train station. Ayutthaya is relatively small, and a tuk-tuk makes for a fun and intimate way to get to know the town from up close.

DAY X – AYUTTHAYA’S HERITAGE BY BICYCLE – NIGHT TRAIN TO CHIANG MAI

Today we invite you on an interesting self-guided cycling tour to explore Ayutthaya, one of the ancient capitals of Thailand, and one of the most significant historical sites in the whole country.

The tour starts at Wat Prasat, a temple located in the Northeast of the Ayutthaya island.  You will of course need a bicycle, which in most cases you can use from your hotel. If not, we also have indicated some bicycle rental options on the map for you in the application. We recommend starting no later than 10.00am as you will need to take the night train to Chiang Mai tonight and you may want to have some free time to freshen up.

The first part of the tour focuses on some local communities and temples to slowly introduce you to the history of this amazing ancient capital. As you pedal along, you will make your way to some of the most impressive temple ruins of Ayutthaya Historical Park, which is designated a UNESCO Heritage site. Taking small paths and quiet streets you will pass along the areas most known and lesser known highlights. You will then cycle along the banks of the Chao Phraya past the areas where the first settlers set up their communities. Towards the end you will have the choice to return to the starting point (or your hotel), or extend with a 5 kilometer loop that passes more ancient settlements and one more major temple.

Remember you will have to be at the Ayutthaya train station at XX.XX for the night train to Chiang Mai at XX.XX. You probably already checked out, but your hotel will let you use the swimming pool facilities in case you want to freshen up and shower. You will take your luggage on the train, but it is useful to put all the things you need in your hand luggage so that it is within easy reach. You may want to prepare an extra jacket or sweater as the air-conditioning can be rather cold. The train has a restaurant bogie where you can have a local dinner.

DAY X – PHUKET TOWN’S CULTURAL AND CULINARY HIGHLIGHTS

Today we propose a self-guided walking tour in Phuket Town. In terms of timing for this tour you have two options:

  • If you are looking for a food experience, it is best to go in the morning as all the restaurants, markets and food stalls will be open. We suggest you arrive around 9.30 – 10.00 for the best food experience. There is no need for a big breakfast as you will have the opportunity to try many dishes along the way. Note that going in the morning provides the most authentic experience, but some shops and places aimed at tourists may not be open yet. The main streets of Phuket town may therefore be a bit less lively.
  • If you just want to enjoy the sights and do some souvenir shopping, going in the afternoon is best. While some food places will be closed, there will still be plenty of opportunities to taste dishes along the way. If you would like to go in the afternoon we suggest that you arrive around 16.00 when the heat starts to lessen. You will also get to see the atmosphere change as the sun sets and get to experience Phuket Town both during the day and at night time.

Go to the starting point of the tour (ask hotel staff if you are not sure what the best way is) to start the self-guided experience. Along the route you will walk along some of the town’s most interesting historical sights as well as local places to taste some of Phuket’s most authentic dishes. Besides that, we have also included some other places like coffee shops, restaurants, bars or museums that we think may be of interest.

Level: 1

Distance and duration of hiking: 3 kilometers – approximately 4 hours including visits
